Presentation Title:

Liver Cancer Incidence Trends and Cardiovascular Implications in the US, 1999-2020

Abstract

Liver cancer incidence increased in the US from 1999 to 2020, with notable disparities among racial, ethnic, and geographic groups. Given shared risk factors between liver disease and Cardio Vascular Disease (CVD), such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, these trends have significant implications for cardiovascular health. Non-Hispanic American Indian/Alaska Native and Black individuals had higher liver cancer incidence rates, mirroring CVD disparities in these populations. Southern and Western states showed elevated rates, suggesting regional lifestyle or environmental factors impacting both liver and heart health. The interplay between liver disease and CVD underscores the need for integrated prevention strategies. Shared risk factors like metabolic dysfunction and unhealthy lifestyles contribute to both liver cancer and CVD, highlighting the importance of holistic management.

Targeted interventions addressing these shared risks—such as promoting healthy diets, increasing physical activity, and improving access to healthcare—could mitigate liver cancer and CVD burdens in high-risk populations. Further research is needed to understand specific drivers of these disparities and optimize prevention strategies.
